Amazing Typewriter Art By Keira Rathbone

December 27th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Meet Keira Rathbone, an artist who is most famously known for her amazing typewriter art.

The creative London artist makes detailed drawings on a typewriter she bought from a Poole charity shop. Typing out  hundreds of letters, numbers and symbols in place of brush strokes and pixels results in beautiful enigmatic images. On average, she spends 90 hours on each typewriter-produced drawing.

However, it doesn’t mean she can’t draw with a regular pencil – vintage typewriter is just one of Keira’s mediums to create her art.

Typerwriter artist Keira now has an arsenal of 30 typewriters and already made ASCII portraits of Kate Moss, Marylin Monroe, Barrack Obama, Tom Hanks and others you are about to see.

30 More Inappropriately Sexy Ads

December 13th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Because of the popularity of our last feature on Sexy Advertising we are really starting to think that our magazine is being read by more than pandas alone as we (pandas) have almost no interest in stuff like that.

In our last article, we talked about how sexual imagery in consumer-oriented print advertising has become almost commonplace. Pretty women, naked bodies – these elements always catch everyones attention. According to Paul Lines, men are more likely to purchase a product that is advertised using a beautiful woman than one that does not. Similarly, men are more attracted to products that suggest they will enhance the man’s attractiveness to women. The reverse is also true. However, does this suggest an effect on human values or is it a natural and instinctive reaction?

Although many people criticize sexuality use in advertising, I really liked Mr Wiggles’ thoughts on that:

“Showing people sexual images cannot harm them. Rather it is just a manifestation of their desires. It is already what is motivating them to do things and already the only reason they would buy a product. Showing the image does nothing but enhance a connection that already exists in the human mind. So it cannot harm human values. It only shows a true representation of them. This is what scares people.”

And what do you think of sexual imagery use in advertising? Do you tolerate it?

Realistic 3D Paper Portraits by Bert Simons

December 9th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you thought 20 Cool Examples of Dollar Bill Origami and One Sheet of Paper Art were cool then you’ll definitely love this. A Dutch artist Bert Simons takes paper folding  art into the whole new level by creating hyper-realistic 3D paper sculptures.

The first step in his process of making a paper portrait is digitizing a model. Bert starts his work by putting a lot of points on his model’s face to have some reference when modeling. He then takes all the data into his computer where he reconstructs the face with Blender, the open source 3D program. After 3D modeling Bert goes back to 2D by flattening the texture and then printing everything out. Finally, he glues this incredibly complex 3D puzzle and turns it into hyper-realistic portraits.

And the best part is that you can build your own Bert! Right click on this link and save the pdf file to your computer. Print the 12 pages on thick (80 grams) paper and start making your own personal Bert.

Portrait Of Mr. Ivo Opstelten

Paper portrait and wearable mask of Mr. Ivo Opstelten, Mayor of Rotterdam 1999-2008. Last 2 months I spent working on this portrait, well 248 hours in total. Besides the paper portrait I also made an wearable mask which features in  a short documentary by Jup de Heer on Mr. Opstelten.

Portrait of Rozemarijn Lucassen

First I have to digitize her. I do this by putting a lot of points on her face to have some reference when modeling.

first parts glued..

and after 3 days of cutting and gluing a new paper portrait..

Portrait of Harry Hamelink

Left harry posing, Right the 3d model. For Harry’s portrait I used the ‘dot per dot’ reference method to reconstruct his face in 3d. I hope to speed up the next portrait by using my laser scan setup which I am experimenting with right now.

Building a piece like this takes about 6 hours, cutting, folding and coloring the edges before gluing.

Anatomy Head

This is my papercraft anatomy head, an anatomical incorrect represantation of the human facial muscles. I have always been fascinated with anatomical drawings and models. Although I collect skulls of birds I don’t have the balls to stuff an dead animal or even a human as Prof. von Hagen with his “korperwelten”does.

Celebrity Portraits Made Out Of Cassette Tapes

December 7th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you have a large collection of old cassette tapes and don’t know what to do with it – check out these amazing Celebrity Portraits by Erika Iris Simmons. She probably had the same problem and now she even became famous for solving it! Smart people say that every problem is an opportunity in disguise, and this probably turned out to be true.

Erika Iris Simmons (born in 1983 in St. Louis, USA) uses old cassette tapes to create incredibly artistic celebrity portraits. Since her emergence Erika has blended the concerns and methods of conceptual art with craft-making and popular culture to create her own whimsical installations. She explores the nostalgia of the archaic, using second-hand items as her prime media.

Currently, Simmons lives and works in Atlanta.

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
