More Incredible Camouflage Art by Liu Bolin

February 23rd, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Before viewing this article, make sure you’ve seen part I, featuring 20 of Liu Bolin’s earlier camouflage pictures.

Born in 1973 in Shandong and a graduate of Shandong Art College and Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts, Liu Bolin became popular for his mastery at the art of camouflaging himself against virtually any background.

One single photo takes up to 10 hours to prepare – Liu uses himself as a blank canvas, and with a little help from an assistant, he paints his body to merge as seamlessly as possible with what is behind him. The results are incredible – sometimes passers-by don’t even realize he is around until he moves.

While his camouflage artworks are really mind blowing, he’s here with a message: “The situation for artists in China is very difficult and the forced removal of the artist’s studio is in fact my direct inspiration of this series of photographs, Hiding In The City…I am standing, but there is a silent protest, the protest against the environment for the survival, the protest against the state.” (Sources: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6)

Realistic Crocheted Portraits By Jo Hamilton

February 22nd, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Jo Hamilton, a Portland-based artist, creates realistic images of people and her environment using the unexpectedly domestic medium of crochet. Her formative training at the Glasgow School of Art was in painting and drawing but, by her own admission, she was never entirely comfortable with the traditional approach.

“My house is filled with balls of yarn, all arranged by colour on shelves. I can pull them out as I need them for my palate. A portrait can take anything up to forty or fifty hours, but I haven’t actually counted, and I spend just as much time looking as actually crocheting. The pieces evolve from the inside out. I make no graphs, plans or charts; it’s a row-by-row organic process in which I don’t always know the outcome, but have learned to trust my way of working,” says the artist.

Her method of working is more like a painter with their box of paints than a person taking out their crochet for a few hours of relaxation.

Back to The Future with Irina Werning

February 17th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

It was interesting comparing Before And After Makeup Photos done by Vadim Andreev but the greatest and the ultimate make-up artist is time. It does its job seamlessly,  and we never seem to notice the slight changes in our faces when we look at a mirror every day. Only old photographs constantly remind us that we’ve changed.

Irina Werning, a photographer born in Buenos Aires, started an interesting project called “Back to The Future” where she takes someone’s old photo and recreates the same old scene with the same person many years later. While it might not sound too complicated, she is unbelievably accurate – it seems that she just found some old and young look-alikes and shot two pictures on the same day.

I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future..by the way, this project made me realise Im a bit obsessive…

Another 35 Funny Graphs And Charts

February 15th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember 35 extremely funny graphs and charts we posted last year? They were so popular that you left us no choice but to do this again! We kept following this cool project, called Graphjam, and manually handpicked another 35 funniest graphs and charts based on social stats and a bit of our personal taste.

For those who didn’t know, GraphJam.com explains daily life, music, songs and pop culture in charts and graphs. Readers can even submit their own graphs based on their own experiences and observations.

According to its founders, GraphJam is the unholy love child of bored office workers, music and pop culture. The mash-up of graphs and music did not originate here, but their inspiration came from their friends at JamPhat. Others say that GraphJam also might want to attribute the Something Awful forums, who did this originally (and from which some of the JamPhat images were taken).

No matter what, you’ll definitely laugh out loud at another 35 funniest graphs from GraphJam!

Tiny Sculptures Made From A Single Toothpick

February 11th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Steven J. Backman, a San Francisco native, makes incredible tiny sculptures using only one toothpick, a straight edged razor blade and glue. It all began in elementary school when Steven made a Science project of DNA molecules from ordinary toothpicks and beans.

While attending San Francisco State University in the fall of 1984, where Steven later received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Arts, he decided to design a San Francisco cable car for an art project using toothpicks and glue. This was one way in which he knew how to show his appreciation for these mobile historical landmarks. Shortly after, Steven established his toothpick art business named “Landmarks of San Francisco,” which he still presently operates.

Steven’s motto, “The Essence of Patience,” truly exemplifies his drive and determination towards creating unique and unforgettable one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Steven feels that making these sculptures is as relaxing as lying on a secluded island at peace with himself and his surroundings. He is truly a perfectionist at heart and takes much pride in his toothpick sculptures.

Animal Lipstick Art by Paige Thompson

February 9th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Although surfing through DeviantArt.com feels like you’ve just built a time machine which brought you back to the early days of the Internet, here you’ll always find lots of artistic geniuses that will blow your mind. And this is exactly what happened this time, so I’d like to introduce Paige Thompson, better known by the nickname of Viridis-Somnio, a body paint artist from United States.

First of all, she has a killer set of lips, and while this is already a half way to success, Paige came up with an original idea of transforming them into cute animals. Second, she has a mole next to her lips, which is like a trademark, and you just can’t stop giggling while reading her post called Yes. I have a mole near my mouth.

Her fantastic lips, incredible idea and painting skills combined with her lively personality makes a killer combo, so we are more than proud to present Animal Lipstick Art by Paige Thompson here on Boredpanda.

Book Origami By Isaac Salazar

February 4th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Isaac Salazar, an accountant born in Texas, brings back life to old books by creating interesting pieces of book origami. It’s his way of recycling a book that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

Isaac has been creating these for almost 2 years now. His books first started out simple and have recently become more intricate.

“I see my work as a way to display a meaningful piece of art onto a book that would otherwise sit on a shelf and collect dust… The words or symbols I use are drawn from anything that invokes inspiration or encouragement, such as “Read”, “Dream” and the Recycle symbol. If my work also makes people look at a book and even art in a new light then the piece has done its job,” says Isaac.

16 Van Gogh’s Paintings Get Tilt-Shifted

February 2nd, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Most likely you’ve already seen a lot of great tilt-shift photography examples lately, but you probably haven’t seen it done with paintings yet! If you are new to this, “tilt shift” is an effect that gives a real-world scene an illusion of being a miniature model. It can be achieved in two ways : optically (with a special lens) or simulated in Photoshop, by adjusting a photograph’s contrast, color saturation and depth of focus.

“It works quite well with regular photographs, so we decided to try it using paintings to see what would happen…” Serena Malyon, a 3rd-year student at art school, took some of van Gogh’s most beautiful paintings and altered them in Photoshop to achieved this amazing tilt-shift effect.

Nothing in any of these paintings been added or removed or had its proportions changed. The effect is achieved simply by manipulating the light in the scene and adjusting the areas of the image that are more and less in focus, as you will see. This is all being done in fun, so don’t take it too seriously.” says the artist.
