Amazing Body Art Illusions by Craig Tracy

June 29th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Born and raised in New Orleans La, USA, Craig Tracy has always been an artist. A graduate with honors from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Craig was a professional Freelance Illustrator by the age of twenty.

“I actually hated being an Illustrator. I was so disappointed by just how mind-numbingly boring and lonely it all was. The isolation created a cabin fever vibe and the fact that I was painting mostly commercial and industrial images seemed empty to me.”

Six years later he retired from Illustration altogether to venture back into painting murals, t-shirt designs and just about anything and everything possible.

“It really clicked, from the very first time that I painted a face, it was strangely powerful. I later realized that I had quiet literally fallen in love with Bodypainting. I personally didn’t take Bodypainting seriously for five or six years. The day that I finally asked myself ‘why’, why I liked painting on people so much, that led me to… Well… What if I take this passionate interest seriously? That one question and a quick Google search changed the course of my life.”

8-Bit Video Game Characters In Real Life

June 27th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

After so many years, I can still vividly remember the day when I got my first gaming console NES. It was one of the happiest days of my life! For those who doesn’t know, NES is an 8-bit video game console that was released back in 1983 by Nintendo. And now, more than 15 years since its release, London-based artist Aled Lewis created a mash-up of video game characters and photographic scenes.

“As a kid I would become completely immersed in there crude pixel environments and they would seem very real! I thought it would be fun to try to express how gamers see these worlds. I spent many hours gaming with my siblings and friends when I was growing up and this aesthetic has really come to represent that time,” says the artist.

So, for every Nintendo fan it will be a big pleasure viewing these images and remembering those careless childhood days.

21 Cool Product Ideas by Sebastian Errazuriz

June 22nd, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Sebastian Errazuriz (1977), born in Chile and currently living in New York, is probably one of the most talented young artists today. By doing little alternations to everyday items he manages to create the most unusual products and fashion pieces that provoke both thought and humor.

Sebastian seeks to create works that can remind people of their mortality, invite them to look again at their lives and question their daily routines. His obsession with the dichotomies of life and death are present in his sculptures, public art works, consumer objects, furniture and even fashion.

Selected one of the top emerging designers by I.D magazine, Sebastian has also been chosen Chilean Designer of the Year, and received multiple awards by design competitions, and the international media. His unique pieces have been incorporated in over 40 exhibitions including Tokyo, New York, Paris and Barcelona. His portrait on multiple magazine covers and hundred of articles showcasing his work, illustrate the interest of the critics and media which follow closely every one of his new projects.

Bear Fur

Teddy-bear-fur coat is an homage to the Campana Brothers and a wink at the 80s eco-friendly fur campaign that seems to be poignant today considering the comeback of furs in fashion runways.

Hanging Tie

There is no other clothing element in the male repertoire as socially symbolic and functionally useless as the tie. A modification in its length can suddenly illustrate its ancestral tyranny and offer new functionalities for this ridiculous piece of cloth that has dangled from our necks for generations.

Lego Motorcycle Helmet

Knuckle Belt

Off The Course Umbrella

This umbrella was inspired by designer Sebastian Errazuriz’s rainy day golf outings. While living in Scotland, he and his friends often found themselves carrying golf clubs and umbrellas simultaneously, which struck inspiration in the young designer. Made of steel, fiberglass, polyester, and rubber. This product is an umbrella and should not be used as a golf club.

Do It Right or Clean Suicide Helmet

Clean Suicide uses the helmets structural properties designed to contain the brain in case of a huge blow. In this case he inverted the concept; the helmet has a perforated side and a real gun permanently attached so that the suicidal person can put the helmet on, close the visor and shoot his brains out. Thanks to the “Clean Suicide” helmet, none of the friends or family have to clean the bits and pieces of brain from the walls afterwards.

Shoes From Recycled Soccer Balls

“In South America most kids only have one pair of shoes. They use the same shoes to go to church on Sunday or play soccer in the streets with their friends. As a consequence their shoes get torn quickly and their angry mothers are always trying to stop them from playing and avoid them ruining their shoes.Watching some kids play on a dirt field I realized there were several old punctured soccer balls lying around. I decided to recycle those old soccer balls and use that strong thick leather to make indestructible soccer shoes so kids could play soccer without worrying about their mothers,” says the artist.

Buckle Belt

Granny Lamp

Knitted electrical cable.

The Duck Lamp

Converse Pants

The Boat Coffin

Because it’s cheaper than buying a boat and a coffin separately.

Glove Dress

Dress made from surgical gloves.

Bicycle Bench

The Bicycle bench was designed as a way to help recycle parts of the hundreds of old rusty damaged bicycles, left to die, chained to the lamp posts of New York City. By reutilizing and welding discarded tubes and saddles the old bike parts can be re-incorporated into the public realm as a simple useful urban furniture piece. The concept also wishes to constitute a sculptural exercise that reminds us of the importance of the bicycle as a valid and ecological mode of transportation even in a city as hectic and impatient as New York.

Zipper Dress

“Bilbao” Tree Shelf

Terrorist Hoodie

Organic Chicken

Life Swing

Public art installation in front of a rehabilitation center for handicapped children. Both children with and without disabilities can choose which of the two swings they want to use. An early reminder of the parallel realities in life.

Hand Jeans

Saint Chair

El Santo, or the “Saint chair” is a signed and numbered limited edition piece, hand crafted out of native Chilean wood, which is later dyed. The halo on top of the chair lights up to “illuminate” the innocent reader. The piece represents another exercise on his personal obsession with life and death and his consequent urge to playfully yet seriously invite people to look again.

Anamorphic Typography by Joseph Egan

June 20th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

London-based graphic designer Joseph Egan together with his colleagues from Chelsea College of Art & Design created this eye-deceiving anamorphic typography installation as part of the assessment for his Foundation Degree course. I have to admit, at first I thought there was some kind of glass wall with a text sticker!

“We initially chose the phrase “It’s more than just print” to challenge the conventional idea that graphic design can only be realised in 2 dimensions (a poster, business card or magazine etc). The phrase is also a comment on the technique as when viewed from the right viewpoint, the design looks as though it is flat on a 2D plain.

For our second installation we chose the phrase “it’s a point of view” as a comment on the process of anamorphosis where the design only becomes fully legible when viewed from a specific point of view. This piece was also a comment on the the subjective nature of good design, given it’s placement in our end of year exhibition featuring works by all of our peers.”

Oversized Everyday Household Objects

June 15th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Spanish sculptor and artist Romulo Celdran (born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1973) makes hyper-realistic oversized versions of everyday household objects.

Romulo says that his series entitled ‘Macro’ “act as camera lens, graduating the scale of measurements with which we perceive what we look at and breaking down the correspondence between the real size of an objects and the size that we perceive depending on how far away from it we are. It acts as a kind of traditional magnifying glass that draws us closer to the object worthy of observation even when we keep an appropriate distance in order to view it.”

“The concept of ‘Macro’ give the object new dimensions, strengthening its presence and inviting us to explore it, discovering hidden spaces and unnoticed nooks. It breaks down the physical laws that govern our logic as observers and place us before a growing world..

20 Creative And Unusual Chair Designs

June 13th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

The chair is of extreme antiquity and simplicity, although for many centuries and indeed for thousands of years it was an article of state and dignity rather than an article of ordinary use. It was not, in fact, until the 16th century that it became common anywhere. The chest, the bench and the stool were until then the ordinary seats of everyday life, and the number of chairs which have survived from an earlier date is exceedingly limited

“The chair” is still extensively used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom and Canada, and in many other settings. Committees, boards of directors, and academic departments all have a chairman. [1]

Well, enough with the history lesson, it’s time to see 20 really creative and modern chair designs that will make you feel bad about your own chair.

1. The Octopus Chair

The artist wanted to be faithful to the animal’s physique and the natural majesty of its movements, therefore Maximo attended to each physical detail of the octopus in order to make the animal the unique protagonist of the whole piece. (Designer: Maximo Riera)

2. The Cut Chair

The “Cut Chair” has only one unbroken leg, and creates an optical illusion that it’s about to fall. However, a plate concealed by a thick carpet allows a robust cantilevered seat. (Designer: Peter Bristol)

3. Pencil Chair

Chair made from hundreds of pencils. (Designer: Anon Pairot)

4. Fish Rocking Chair

Designer has taken soft perishable sardines and found a way to use them as the building material in his most recent project. The individual components have been created through a process of lost wax casting, creating solid aluminum fish from their edible counterparts. (Designer: Tristan Cochrane)

5. Milipede Chair

This arthropodic stool looks like a science experiment that escaped and headed straight for the bar. (Designer: Michael Samoriz)

6. The Empty Chair

For the campaign “The Empty Chair”, designer made the symbolic empty chair, to support Amnesty in their fight for freedom of expression. (Designer: Maarten Baas)

7. Shopping Cart Lounger

“Designer takes the common shopping cart and reapproriates it,transforming it into an object of leisure and design.” [1] (Designer: Mike Bouchet)

8. Chair For Cafe

The design satisfies both elements of functional and decorative design. The seats appears like a silhouette of a coffee mug, whose handle can be used as a hook for draping a jacket or hanging a bag.[2] (Designer: Sunhan Kwon)

9. Beautiful Bloom Chair

Made of deep soft folds of handmade microfibre fabric stitched into a steel base, the chair is available in Red, Moss Green, Light Green & Yellow. This lounge chair will make you feel like fairytale Thumbelina in a beautiful flower.” [3] (Designer: Kenneth Cobonpue)

10. The Seatub

The ‘seatub’ chair combines the idea of relaxing in a chair and a bathtub [4] (Designer: Ki Kim)

11. The Atar Chairs

“Gravitational Illusion. A fantasy of optically excellent proportions. These chairs float between naturalistic and industrial on a bed of impossibility.” [5] (Designers: Christian Andrés Parra Sánchez, Juliana Andrea Mosquera.)

12. A Chair With A Rug

“Designed for Italian furniture company “Casamania”, the chair features a metal structure in which ‘over-sized yarn’ is woven through to create a softness. the main base and seat are tightly woven, gradually getting looser in their stitching along the length of the chaise lounge, eventually fanning out over the floor making it an object that stands between carpet and furniture.” [6] (Designer: Sophie De Vocht)

13. Lathe Chair

“Designer started this series as a graduation project for the Eindhoven Academy and has since continued working on it.[7] (Designer: Sebastian Brajkovic)

14. Him&Her Chairs

Light and sensational chair design. (Designer: Fabio Novembre)

15. Rocking On The Beach

“Have you ever experienced to dream that you are going to the beach? Breeze, the sound of waves and the sandy beach, these make our feeling so good. Rocking on the Beach helps you imagine the one of these experiences in your home. The plastic and pipe shape is designed for the best seashore sound, which is researched around the Netherlands seaside. The shape of chair with full of pipes gives a strong impression as an electronic circuit or urban city landscape.” [8] (Designers: Joon&Jung Designteller)

16. Tunnel Chair

Tunnel chairs are created by bending metal tubes, then wrapping elastic bands around, closing with velcro. (Designer: Noga Berman)

17. Splash Chair

“Ever look at macro photos of water splashes or super slow mo’ video of a droplet slamming into the surface sending ripples across a lake? There’s a moment in that 1/10 of a second when the impact creates a crater or sorts, as if you were small enough, it could neatly cup you. Inspired designer Michael Wendel created a 1/8th scale model called the Splash Lounge Chair, big enough for us to sit in.[9] (Designer: Michael L. Wendel)

18. Selfportrait Chair

“The theory behind designing the Selfportrait Chair is very honest and simple. As an introvert, graduate student Ka-Lai Chan found it difficult to express her emotions lest her peers ridicule her. The stifled emotions grew like a nagging tumor and are seen as those odd blobs on this chair. Rarely do we come across an emotional side to a design accurately represented as this!” [10] (Designer: Ka-Lai Chan)

19. Skull Chair

“Souviens toi que tu vas mourir” (remember that you will die) chair by Pool, from the “Nouvelle Vague (New Wave), the New French Domestic Landscape” exhibition at the Milan Design Furniture. (link)

20. Puzzle-Like Inception Chair

Taking the chair archetype and placing within it chairs that are progressively smaller. Each chair has hand cut grooves on the inside edges of its seat frame as well as notches in the seat back. These grooves range from 1/2” wide to 1/8” wide. The mechanism works so that the pegs fit into the grooves of the chair one size bigger and slides into place so that the horizontal edge between the chair seat and back line up. The simple mechanism allows the chairs to be taken apart and put together with ease. (Designer: Vivian Chiu)

Roller Buggy: Baby Stroller and Scooter Hybrid

June 10th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

The Roller Buggy is a multi-functional baby carriage transformable into a scooter. Through a simple pull motion of the lower body, it extends the normal baby carriage into a scooter, making a more sportive and faster transportation on various terrains and giving both parties a good time. The transformation to a scooter occurs through a simple pull motion of the lower body and steering is achieved by leaning left and right (skateboard principle). It allows the usage of many different-shaped seats, as well as third party seats, through special-made adaptors. (Designed by pixstudio)

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.
