Breathtaking 3D Goldfish Paintings by R. Fukahori

January 27th, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

It’s hard to believe, but these lively goldfish swimming in the bowls are not real at all! A Japanese artist named Riusuke Fukahori is painting these incredibly realistic three-dimensional goldfish using acrylic paint layered over clear resin. Just like 3D printer[1], the artists paints the fish layer by layer, with the sandwiched slices revealing slight more about each creature.

When struggling with artistic vision, Fukahori’s pet goldfish became his inspiration and ever since his passion and lifelong theme. His unique style of painting uses acrylic on clear resin which is poured into containers, resulting in a three-dimensional appearance and lifelike vitality. This exhibition features twenty new painting works by this leading Japanese contemporary artist.”[2]

Riusuke Fukahori’s exhibition called “Goldfish Salvation” was recently on show at the ICN Gallery in London.

Harmless Weapons by Kyle Bean

January 26th, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

While the name of the artist may sound unfamiliar to many, I’m sure most of you have already seen Kyle’s amazing collection of Pencil Shaving Portraits or the famous Chicken made from eggshells. This time, Brighton-based designer Kyle Bean created a collection of harmless weapons for an article in CUT Magazine centered around the topic of ‘Guerrilla Gardening’ and ‘Yarn Bombing’.

Personally, my favorite one is the feather knife as the feather perfectly matches the size and the shape of the knife while at the same time being completely harmless. Other weapons are also great, and you just can’t not love the minimalism and clever selection of the background colors!

Kyle Specializes in hand crafted models, set design and art direction, and since graduating in 2009, he has worked across a variety of platforms including installations, window displays, editorial and advertising.

Back to The Future with Irina Werning (Part II)

January 23rd, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember Irina Werning and her cool project called “Back to The Future” we’ve posted earlier? Well, it appears that Irina hasn’t stopped there and released the part II of her series.

A photographer born in Buenos Aires takes someone’s old photo and recreates the same old scene with the same person many years later. While it might not sound too complicated, she is unbelievably accurate – it seems that she just found some old and young look-alikes and shot two pictures on the same day.

“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future..by the way, this project made me realize I’m a bit obsessive…” says the artist.

Giant Mirrored Building Facade Turns Visitors Into Spiderman

January 21st, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you happen to be in France right now, you can finally make your old dream come true! A giant mirrored building facade by artist Leandro Erlich will instantly turn you into a Spiderman. The installation is called Bâtiment (Building) and is currently on display at Le 104 in Paris as part of their In_Perceptions exhibition.

As we talked before, Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich is known for installations that seem to defy the basic laws of physics and befuddle the viewer. Be sure to also check out his incredible Fake Swimming Pool we featured earlier (if you haven’t done that yet.)

This awesome optical illusion is on display through March 2012, so don’t miss an excellent opportunity to climb a wall like Spiderman!

Word as Image by Ji Lee

January 19th, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Word as Image invites you to see letters beyond their utilitarian dullness. It’s about discovering the magic behind the unique shapes and infinite possibilities of letters and words. This book showcases nearly 100 of Ji Lee’s head-scratching word images, along with tips to help you create your own.

“When we were children, letters were like fun toys. We played with them through our building blocks. We colored them in books. We danced and sang along with TV puppets while learning C was for “cookie.” Soon, letters turned into words. Words turned into sentences. Sentences turned into thoughts. And along the way, we stopped playing with them and stopped marveling at A through Z,” says the author.

“Anyone can create a word as image. It doesn’t require any design or drawing skills. All you need is a little creative thinking and to see words and letters in a different way. The dictionary is filled with thousands of fun visual puzzles just waiting to be solved. Visit www.wordasimage.com to submit your solution.”

30 Amazing Infinity Pools Around The World

January 18th, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you’re suffering from winter blues and short, dark days are getting you down, then it’s time to take at least a virtual vacation and see some sunny pictures. To be more exact, let’s take a look at some of the most beautiful Infinity Pools Around The World.

According to Wikipedia: “An infinity edge pool (also named negative edge, zero edge, disappearing edge or vanishing edge pool) is a swimming or reflecting pool which produces a visual effect of water extending to the horizon, vanishing, or extending to “infinity”. One type of location in which the effect is particularly impressive is where the infinity edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, with the sky.”

The infinity pool design concept is said to have originated in France, where one of the first vanishing edge designs was utilized in the “Stag Fountain” at the Palace of Versailles in the early 1600s. However, they are often very expensive and require extensive structural, mechanical (hydraulic engineering) and architectural detailing.

Bat House by Estres Studio

January 13th, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

I’m not sure if bats would recognize the symbolic shape of the entrance hole, but this work by Estres studio is definitely capable of putting a smile on the viewers’ faces. From their website: “Mus as an ornamental object, recreates an upside down jail and represents the bats’ lost homes. An animal that has been vilipended by man, with a fundamental role in our environment and hitherto a terribly endangered species.”

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
