DIY Cutting Board Bird Feeder

April 27th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

At first I thought it was a great idea, now I’m not so sure. Several commenters pointed out that bread is bad for birds. For example, people at Eugene’s Alton Baker park were asked to stop feeding bread to birds because it can cause a condition called “angel wing”. The condition is marked by a deformed wing and spindly feathers that poke out at right angles. It’s a result of a poor diet, such as calorie-rich breads, that causes birds’ feathers to develop faster than their bones[1]. I’m sure the idea author Curro Claret wasn’t aware of that and all he wanted to do is to feed his little friends.

5,000 Books Pour Out of a Window in Spain

April 26th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Spanish installation artist Alicia Martin transforms thousands of old books into giant waterfalls which pour out the windows straight into the streets. Her massive installations have been installed in various places across Europe, however Martin’s most recent series, known as Biografies, are based in her hometown, Madrid.

These gravity-defying book sculptures from her Biografies series were installed in the three of Madrid’s historic buildings, each installation consisting of approximately 5,000 books.

To support the heavy weight of the books, each sculpture has a special metal framework inside. They make the installation safe and sturdy, however the books’ pages are left loose and free to rustle in the wind.

Pencil vs Camera by Ben Heine (Part II)

April 25th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

I have been following Ben Heine on flickr ever since I first saw his amazing Pencil Vs Camera series back in 2010. He is an outstanding photographer, and we are more than happy to share some of his new works along with the ones we’ve missed earlier.

Belgian painter Ben Heine has been taking photos and drawing almost since he was 10 years old. This “Pencil Vs Camera” series is nothing but the result of several years of graphic exploration and a logic consequence of his artistic evolution, says Ben. But the real idea came while he was watching television and writing a letter at the same time.

Reading my letter before putting it in the envelope, I saw in transparency the television behind the paper. I then realized it would be great to make something similar in a single image showing 2 different actions. I went outside and Drew “Pencil Vs Camera 1? which is very simple and shows 2 chairs with a small table. About ¼ of the scene is represented on the paper, the other ¾ happens on the photo.

Hand Drawn Animated Gifs by Dain Fagerholm

April 24th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg who creatively used animated GIFs to create so-called cinemagraphs?

Seattle-based illustrator Dain Fagerholm also adopted animated GIF technology to make his hand drawn monsters come to life. However, this time GIFs were used to create a cool 3-D effect. It was achieved by rapidly changing a couple of images with slightly shifted perspectives.

Of course, stereographic images existed for hundreds of years and it isn’t something completely new. However, it’s unusual to see this technique used for hand drawn illustrations.

Technique is one thing, but what really catches my attention is the cuteness of Dain’s illustrations. It seems that childhood book illustrations have suddenly come to life.

Portrait Made of 750 Pairs of Socks

April 23rd, 2012 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

Shanghai-based artist Hong Yi, also known as Red, used 750 pair of socks to create a rather unusual sock portrait of famous Chinese film director Zhang Yimou. Yi, which is famous for her Coffee Stain Portrait, spent over three weeks on the project and used black, white and grey socks.

Describing her inspiration, the artist said: “When I first moved to Shanghai, I stumbled upon an old residential alleyway and saw bamboo sticks poking out of windows with laundry hanging onto them, waving in the air. To me, that was incredibly beautiful. And the amazing thing is seeing something so traditional in a modern, pumping city like Shanghai

“I ended up using 750 pairs of socks because shirts were too big and expensive, plus I found an interesting way to pin the socks together, creating a diamond-shaped piece of skin.”

Creative Dad Takes Crazy Photos Of Daughters

April 18th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you are tired of posed, stiff and cheesy family portraits, then take a look at these incredibly creative pictures taken by Jason Lee.

Jason who is a wedding photographer started taking photos of his two little daughters back in 2006 when his mom was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The girls were constantly sick, with colds and coughs so he couldn’t always bring them to visit their grandmother. Jason wanted her to be able to see her granddaughters without catching their kid germs so he started a blog where his mom could see what was going on in their lives.

Most of the ideas come from his daughters – eight-year-old Kristin and five-year-old Kayla. Jason says that they are never-ending source of ideas.

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
