Amazing Shadow Art by Kumi Yamashita

June 19th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita creates amazing shadow art by using various seemingly ordinary items and some light.

A giant steel exclamation point, lit from right angle becomes a question mark, paper sheets cast shadows that look like faces, aluminum numbers add up to create a silhouette of a woman – these are just a few examples of what can be done with shadows. The possibilities are endless, but you probably already knew that if you had seen the works of Tim Noble & Sue Webster or Rashad Alakbarov that we posted earlier.

“I sculpt shadow with light or sometimes light with shadow, but both function in essentially the same manner. I take objects and carve and place them in relation to a single light source. The complete artwork is therefore comprised of both the material (the solid objects) and the immaterial (the light or shadow).”

Incredible Water Splash Flowers by Jack Long

June 18th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Milwaukee-based photographer Jack Long creates gorgeous water splash flowers that last only a fraction of a second and you won’t find them in any flower store!

The artist shapes and colors the liquid flowers by using a mixture of water, thickener, pigment and dye. Unbelievably, every shot from the “Vessels and Blooms” series is captured in one high speed exposure, without any Photoshop.

“Wanted to advance my fluid suspension/high speed photography to a higher level. I created the liquid Vase in the autumn of 2011. I worked on creating the floral forms and leaves through the winter and put it all together Spring 2012. All of my images, unless otherwise noted are single capture events. I do not use photoshop to create composited images. What you see is what occurred in that single exposure.”

Abyssal: Amazing Optical Illusion by Regina Silveira

June 15th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

“Abyssal is an image of an abyss constructed in vertical anamorphosis, in which successive lines of windows in great perspectival compression provoke the perception of a space in depth, which will function as a virtual hole able to provide uncanny spatial distortions. This large-format digital image also involves a temporal dimension – since through it I sought to recover, almost archaeologically, the memory of the old-fashioned windows of the market that used to operate in this building.” (Designer: Regina Silveira)

New Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee

June 14th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Canadian artist Guy Laramee has recently published a new series of his amazing book landscapes which are made by carving old books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. He calls his new project “Guan Yin” and dedicates it “to the mysterious forces thanks to which we can traverse ordeals”.

“My mother died in 2011. I was with her when she took her last breath. In fact there was no last breath. Each breath grew smaller and smaller. I took her pulse when it appeared that there would not be another breath. I like to think that there was one last tiny heart beat, but in fact there was no end. Only a growing silence which continues now.

Everything we know, everything we did, everything we think we are, everything and everyone we love, all this will be wiped out. We would like to think that something will remain, culture, knowledge, or call it “life” if you don’t want to call it God, but of this also, we have no certitude. “No certitude” seems to be the only one we have, but even this is a concept, and concepts are the first thing to go down the drain, aren’t they?”

Miniature Body Part Jewelry by Percy Lau

June 12th, 2012 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

London-based designer Percy Lau creates tiny lifelike human body parts that can be worn as jewelry.

Her weirdly awesome accessories include little third ear, mouth, nose and even a tiny male genitalia. You can wear them as earrings, necklaces, and rings.

All of them are fun, but I’d pick the Little Third Ear earrings as they look incredibly cool when put in our big ears. The only thing they lack is the customization to match your actual skin tone.

You can get these weird body part accessories on Etsy for $24-$42.

What about you? Would you wear them?

Human Hair Necklaces by Kerry Howley

June 11th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

“Attraction/Aversion” is Kerry Howley’s award winning graduate collection, winning the Museum of Domestic Architecture’s Arthur Silver Award for graduate innovation and excellence. It is a material exploration of how people can feel seemingly opposing emotional responses simultaneously.

The necklaces are made of human hair, a familiar material that we take pride in. However once off of the body hair becomes an innate source of aversion. Kerry wanted to see if she could make discarded hair attractive again.

Through the familiar form of a necklace, and using patterns and symmetry that are instinctively pleasing, Kerry has created a delicate balance between the viewer/wearer’s feelings of aversion and attraction.

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things
