Clever Ads Show That Science Can be Fun

October 11th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Science World museum in collaboration with Rethink Canada created a series of brilliant ambient and billboard ads dedicated to promoting science in Vancouver.

One of the most eye-catching ones was probably the 6000$ worth of billboard covered in pure gold with the words “2 oz. of gold can cover a billboard”. Two ounces may not sound like a lot, but just in case, Science World hired two guards to look after it day and night. That’s just one example of the clever science promotion campaign. The ambient ads included smartly placed factoids, giving out funny, interesting or sometimes even gross information right on the streets.

The whole campaign shows that science is as cool as you present it. So if your kid just won’t stop yawning during a science class, maybe it’s not entirely his problem..?

33 Powerful and Creative Public Interest Ads

December 5th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Whereas the objective of a standard advertisement is to market a product, a public service ad is intended to change the public interest, by raising awareness of an issue, affecting public attitudes, and potentially stimulating action. Advertising, in its non-commercial guise, is a powerful educational tool capable of reaching and motivating large audiences.

“Advertising justifies its existence when used in the public interest—it is much too powerful a tool to use solely for commercial purposes.” Attributed to Howard Gossage by David Ogilvy.

According to Wikipedia, public service advertising, non-commercial advertising, public interest advertising, cause marketing, and social marketing are different terms for the use of sophisticated advertising and marketing communications techniques (generally associated with commercial enterprise) on behalf of non-commercial, public interest issues and initiatives.

20 Most Creative Ads on Buildings

November 11th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

You’ve probably already seen our huge list of World’s Strangest Buildings, and now it’s time to see how buildings can be creatively used  in advertising.

Yesterday I was walking by an office building and looked up and saw a huge sign on it: “Affection”. As it turns out, it’s the name of an IT company that is renting some office space in that building. However, from a mere mortal’s point of view, it may seem that the whole building belongs to them.

If a plain logo can have such a strong impact when placed on a building, this means that after putting some creativity in your message – it could have a tremendous success. Besides being on 24 hours a day, ads on buildings also target a specific audience according to location.

To sum up, building advertisements are BIG, powerful, location-based and always on. And if they are really good – they also end up here on Bored Panda.

Creative Uses of Handles in Transit Advertising

October 28th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

After looking at 33 Cool and Creative Bus Shelter Advertisements, it’s time to move inside and check some great interior transit advertising examples. To be more specific, we’re  talking about creative bus and subway handle advertisements.

Why should advertisers use it? Well, first of all, handles are interactive in their nature. When a bus or a train moves fast  – you have to grab onto something, and this involves touching the handles around you. This is exactly what every advertiser dreams of – users interacting with their advertisements. Not to mention touching leads to better  remembering of the message.

Moreover, clever use of handles in advertising will definitely reach much wider audience than just the riders on a bus or a train as it can easily become viral  on the Internet these days. So, it’s guerrilla marketing as long as it’s really cool.

Also, riders can’t turn it off, and because they are dieing of boredom waiting for their stop – they will definitely notice and read  each and every word on a handle advertisement. Enough of the talks, let’s see the best examples of creative handle advertisements!

33 Cool and Creative Bus Stop Advertisements

October 15th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

It’s been a long time since we had our last post on advertising, so it’s a perfect time to look into the world of bus shelter ads. However, before jumping to the real world examples, let’s talk about it first.

Bus shelter ads also known as “transit shelter displays” are highly effective, sometimes more so than larger hoardings, claims research sponsored by Right Angle Media.[1]  Moreover, some areas do not have billboards as an advertising option, so transit shelter advertising will often be an excellent alternative to larger billboards.[2]

In addition to that [3]:

  • Bus Shelter Ads Are Always On. They work for you 24 Hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Bus Shelter Advertising Offers Great Visibility. Drivers, pedestrians and bus riders all will see your ads.
  • Bus Shelter Ads Provide Multiple Impressions Per Prospective Customer. People passing by on a regular basis are bound to notice your ad.
  • Bus Shelter Ads Give Precise Geographic Targeting. If you do business locally and want to target local consumers, there’s no better advertising vehicle.

On the other hand, plain bus stop advertising cannot get consumer’s attention effectively because of one-way communication. But this is where advertiser’s creativity comes into play creating installation-based bus shelter ads which can do two-ways communication.[4] Interactivity and consumer’s involvement is the key to success here. Usually, people are bored to death waiting for a bus, so everyone would thank advertisers for giving a little game to play, and eventually maybe even buy the product later.

To sum up, bus shelters is a wonderful medium for advertising, but it takes a lot of creativity to make the best of it. Without further ado, let’s see  the 33 best practices of bus stop advertising and share our thoughts afterwards!

Another 25 Creative Ambient Ads

August 15th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Everyone who liked 33 Cool and Creative Ambient Ads will definitely enjoy 25 more creative examples of ambient advertising.

It may be hard to believe, but an average North American sees 3,000 ads per day [1]. They are everywhere – at the gas pumps, in a bathroom, in the movie theater, on a bus and in the bus – advertising is impossible to avoid.

Due to advertisers’ dismay at the declining effectiveness of traditional advertising mediums, ambient advertising has increased in popularity over recent years[2].

However, some think ambient advertising contains the seeds of its own destruction… because once the approach is copied and becomes commonplace, it ceases to surprise, Guardian, August 1997.

Another problem is that “genuine impact of ambient media is difficult to measure as it often takes TV and press coverage to attract wider public attention to it.” Sunday Business all the way back in 1998.

In the end, whilst not taking off in a huge way, ambient advertising shows no sign of going away. And to prove that – we collected Another 25 Creative Ambient Ads. Enjoy, and don’t forget to tell us what you think!
