What If Models From Classic Paintings Were Real?

May 24th, 2013 by Ieva | No Comments | Filed in Design

19-year-old Hungarian photographer Flora Borsi wonders where some of the greatest artists got their inspirations from, and imagines what their muses could’ve looked like if they were real people. In her Real Life Models photo manipulation series, Flora recreates the distorted features from classic paintings by such artists as Rudolf Hausner, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso and Kees van Dongen, and that way brings some very surreal-looking people to the real world.

“Nowadays almost every photographer use graphics software to complete the picture, like many painters used ‘original version’ in the past. Some artists use pure imagination to paint their artworks, others may prefer to create art by using a real life model as reference for the anatomy. What if these abstract models were real people?” asks Flora. Definitely a fresh and creative take on classic art!

11 Creative and Unusual Cake Designs

May 23rd, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

When somebody says “cake“, we typically imagine a round baked sweet, most often decorated with fancy flowers and ribbons, layered together from different kinds of goodies. However, the first cakes, recorded in Ancient Rome and Greece, were way different: the Romans would simply enhance basic bread dough with butter, eggs and honey, and the more creative Greeks would make their version of a cheesecake, using goat’s milk. The term “cake”, however, originates from the times of the Vikings, and their Old Norse word for it, “kaka”.

Whichever one it is – cheesecake, sponge cake, butter cake, fruit cake – just the sight of it usually makes our mouths water. Recently, however, confectioners started to get a bit more creative with the decorations we’re so used to seeing. Not only were the good old flowers replaced with a bit more odd figurines (like, for instance, little piglets), but the shapes of the desserts started to vary from funny to bizarre. Here’s a selection of some quite extraordinary cake designs out there – how would you feel if you were served one that’s disguised as turkey or a human baby?

‘Cat Beard’ Craze Takes Internet By Storm

May 22nd, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Don’t freak out if you see a friend upload a photo of him-(or her-!) self with a massive beard, which, at a second glance, looks oddly similar to a cat. This is all a part of a new photo trend – a meme that’s called ‘cat beards’ or ‘cat-bearding’. The trick is to have your feline friend in front and covering half of your face – and when the cat looks up, it’s chin and neck looks like a massive beard on your face.

The first ‘cat beard’ picture was uploaded back on July 28th, 2011, by a Tumblr user Catasters, where the guy was touching noses with his cat. In several days, the picture was featured on some of the biggest Internet portals. A single topic blog called catbeards.com on Tumblr accelerated the trend in the early 2012; so much so, that a set of 5 Cat Beard photos, uploaded on May 16th, 2013, got over 50.000 notes in 24 hours. The lesson is simple – cats make everything go viral.

Old Bike Parts Turned Into Impressive Chandeliers

May 21st, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

Artists Joe O’Connell and Blessing Hancock transformed old bike parts into six spectacular chandeliers, and hung them in the underpass of Theo/Malone and IH-35 San Antonio, Texas. ‘Ballroom Luminoso’ chandeliers contain a custom-made LED light installation, which turned the space into a magnificent shadow theater and a new spot for people to enjoy some public art. The bike parts create intricate shadow patterns and make the underpass look truly surreal.

‘Ballroom Luminoso’ globes also contain small medallions, which are designed to reflect “on the community’s agricultural history, strong Hispanic heritage, and burgeoning environmental movement“, as explained by the artists. The project of bringing this urban space on the public art map was carried out by the San Antonio City’s Department for Culture and Creative Development. “By incorporating public art into the most accessible places, we are bringing our community together and creating an inviting neighborhood for our residents and for other members of our city,” said representatives of the Council.

This definitely brings more color the city! What do you think?

Incredible 3D Latte Art by Kazuki Yamamoto

May 20th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

You don‘t even have to love coffee in order to appreciate these super creative latte foam artworks by Japanese artist Kazuki Yamamoto. And we‘re not talking about the little smiley faces or flat palm tree patterns: this 26-year old latte artist, based in Osaka, creates actual 3D foam sculptures in the coffee mugs of the Cafe10g visitors. This thinking outside the box – or, rather – outside the cup – even gave Kazuki the idea to make the coffee foam climb out of one cup and reach for another. That way you might be served with a cup of coffee where a cat is trying to get into another one next to it, where tiny fish are swimming.

Besides these meticulous 3D sculptures, Kazuki also does some amazing flat latte art. His subjects vary from manga and video game characters to portraits of such people as Albert Einstein or John Lennon. Kazuki says his dream is to open up a his own cafe in Tokyo one day. For more 3d latte art, be sure to follow him on twitter.

Extreme Plane Landings at Maho Beach, Saint Martin

May 17th, 2013 by Ieva | No Comments | Filed in Design

You’d expect a typical beach to be a nice and quiet haven to relax and chill – but tourists flood the Maho Beach on the Saint Martin island to get exactly the opposite. The beach on the Dutch side of the Caribbean islands is known for all the low-flying airliners, which fly so closely above the beach that people can actually be blown into the water because of the jet blast (or that’s at least what the local government signs warn you about).

Local Princess Juliana International Airport is not only really close to the beach, but also has an unusually short runway of only 7,150 feet (2180 meters). In order to complete a smooth landing, the aircraft gets as close to the beginning of the Runway 10 as possible – and ends up flying right over the heads of eager tourists, directing their cameras towards the impressive sight.

The plane spotting has become so popular that the local residents have even developed a whole infrastructure around it: the beach bar owners put up boards with timetables of the arrivals and departures so that people could plan their time; one of the bars even broadcasts real-time radio transmissions between the airport’s control tower and and the aircraft. How many roaring airlines over your head would you handle in one day?

20 Amazing Examples of Animal Camouflage

May 16th, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

Survival can become a challenging task in the wild – especially if you’re smaller or slower than your possible predators. This is why many animal species have developed different ways to camouflage themselves throughout the course of evolution. Ways to camouflage differ depending mostly on three factors: the physiology and behavior of the animal, then those of the predator and the environment, in which the animal lives and hunts its food. Blending in with the environment is the most common approach.

Natural selection plays its part here as well: as the way in which an animal camouflages itself is determined genetically, every new generation adapts to its surroundings better. What usually happens is than an animal imitates the coloration of its natural habitat, although some species are known to be able to adjust their coloration. The most common example is a chameleon, although some furry animals and birds may loose their feathers and fur completely and replace it with a new one for a new season.

Surprisingly, sometimes the best way to camouflage oneself is to stick with the herd: for example, when a lion walk by a bunch of zebras, it only sees a big striped mass. Some fish that are covered in bright vertical stripes might also be clearly visible when alone, but if a large group of them swims by, a predator will see an unidentified colored blob. Without further ado, here are 20 amazing examples of animal camouflage. Can you find all the animals?

5-Year-Old Posing As the Most Influential Women in History

May 15th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Photographer Jaime Moore was looking for inspirational ideas to celebrate her daughter Emma’s 5th birthday, and ended up photographing her beautiful girl posing as some of the most influential women in history. Jaime chose 5 women for Emma to impersonate, and thus her daughter became the mini version of Coco Chanel, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller and Jane Goodall.

“I had been searching everywhere for new-creative inspiration for her 5yr pictures. I noticed quite a pattern of so many young girls dressing up as beautiful Disney Princesses. It started me thinking about all the REAL women for my daughter to know about and look up too, REAL women who without ever meeting Emma have changed her life for the better,” says Jaime. “I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. So let’s set aside the Barbie Dolls and the Disney Princesses for just a moment, and let’s show our girls the REAL women they can be,” she explained.

26 Faces in Everyday Objects

May 14th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Have you ever noticed how various objects and constructions look as if they’ve got faces – they are smiling, being angry or amazed. However, what some may call acuteness to detail is usually attributed to a psychological phenomenon, called pareidolia – that’s when a person perceives a random stimulus as something significant, for e.g., sees faces on clouds or buildings.

On the other hand, it doesn’t necessary mean you’re crazy. For example, carmakers are very much aware of this tendency of people to see faces on inanimate objects, and according to car critic Dan Neil “sometimes they play toward it, and sometimes they play against it.”

It may also be more common among people with a wilder imagination. Leonardo Da Vinci once wrote that when an artist is about to invent and paint some scene, he will be able to visualize it on practically any surface. So, if you happen to see an odd face on a wall every once in a while, don’t worry – chances are you’re perfectly normal

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things
