Unbelievably Realistic Objects Carved Entirely out of Wood

June 4th, 2013 by Ieva | No Comments | Filed in Design

You might have trouble believing it at a first glance, but these sculptures by Arizona-based artist Tom Eckert are made entirely out of wood! Tom carves all the pieces, then laminates and paints the whole thing after putting it together. He mostly uses linden, limewood and basewood, and all the traditional laminating and painting techniques. That’s when you realize that it’s pure talent and patience that makes these pieces so unique!

A beautiful and recurring detail in Tom’s sculptures is pieces of cloth, draped over another object. They give you serious trouble believing that the sculptures are wooden: each imitation of a cloth falls gently and seems to be practically weightless. “By tradition, cloth has been widely used to conceal and shroud objects in practices ranging from advertising to church rituals. Covered forms are often more evocative – with a sense of mystery absent from the uncovered object by itself,” explains Tom.

Tom’s aspiration to create such wooden illusions comes from his childhood: “Since childhood, I have been curious about and amused by mistaken impressions of reality presented as part of my visual experiences. “Cloth” carved of wood has much different structural qualities than real cloth. When this idea is applied to my compositions (floating book, floating cards, floating rock) a sense of the impossible happens – for me, magic.” And magic is not and overstatement in this case!

More Amazing Pumpkin Carvings by Ray Villafane

October 29th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Last year we showed you some terrifyingly cool carved pumpkins by American sculptor Ray Villafane, and now he’s back with some new pumpkin faces!

His pumpkin carving career started back at Michigan School called Bellaire where he used to be an art teacher. Once he was asked to help out with Halloween decorations at school, and given a pumpkin to carve. Ray saw it as any another piece of clay as opposed to a large vegetable and by using his common clay carving tools, created his first artistic pumpkin. The kids loved it so much that they kept bringing him new pumpkins and Ray would get more and more creative.

Ray then showcased his skills on the Food Network’s Challenge Show, and his overnight success allowed him to resign from teaching in 2006 to pursue a full time sculpting career. Despite all of the big name products Ray was sculpting, the public seemed to be most intrigued with his on going pumpkin carvings. Ray has been featured on many TV shows including The CBS Evening News and in 2010 Ray was even invited to carve pumpkins at the White House!

Carved Fruit and Veggie Skulls by Dimitri Tsykalov

June 25th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Pumpkin carving is so yesterday! With stores full of various fruits and vegetables, there is no excuse not to use them for carving.

Russian artist Dimitri Tsykalov uses apples, eggplants, watermelons and even cabbages to create his creepy skull carvings. Interestingly, the artist lets some of the pieces rot then incorporates them into photos together with the fresher pieces.[1]

Tsykalov is also famous for his provocative work using flesh as a medium to send environmental messages like inhumane animal treatment, food waste and world hunger. Born in 1963 in Moscow, Russia, Dimitri now lives and works in Paris.

New Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee

June 14th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Canadian artist Guy Laramee has recently published a new series of his amazing book landscapes which are made by carving old books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. He calls his new project “Guan Yin” and dedicates it “to the mysterious forces thanks to which we can traverse ordeals”.

“My mother died in 2011. I was with her when she took her last breath. In fact there was no last breath. Each breath grew smaller and smaller. I took her pulse when it appeared that there would not be another breath. I like to think that there was one last tiny heart beat, but in fact there was no end. Only a growing silence which continues now.

Everything we know, everything we did, everything we think we are, everything and everyone we love, all this will be wiped out. We would like to think that something will remain, culture, knowledge, or call it “life” if you don’t want to call it God, but of this also, we have no certitude. “No certitude” seems to be the only one we have, but even this is a concept, and concepts are the first thing to go down the drain, aren’t they?”

Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee

January 2nd, 2012 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Artist Guy Laramee creates amazing miniature book landscapes out of old books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. His series entitled The Great Wall and Biblios represent the degradation of human culture and show glacial landscapes, deep valleys and plateaus.

“So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes,” says the artist on his website. “Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.

And what do you do with your old books?

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things
