iPhone Amplifiers Made from Recycled Brass Instruments

March 14th, 2013 by Jolita | No Comments | Filed in Design

Speakers that are not only good looking but also of a good quality can be hard to find. Especially if you have a knack for something old-school. Christopher Locke creates hand-made amplifiers so-called Analog Tele-Phonographerspurposed to volume up your iPhone or iPad and at the same time to bring out the old times vibe. He designs custom-built loudspeakers from recycled trumpets, trombones, french horns and other brass instruments.

The design concept of an old-fashioned phonograph definitely adds some extra charm. What’s good about these unusual amplifiers is that they require no external power source. You can check out how they work in the video.

Cat Transit System for a Home Office

December 22nd, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember the Pipeline Fish Tank we listed in the collection of the most unusual and creative aquariums? This cat transit system is based on exactly the same idea, but this time it’s dedicated for our feline friends.

Architecture firm Because We Can, led by interior designer Jillian Northrup and her husband architect Jeffrey McGrew, had to turn an under utilized room in a private residence into a highly functional and inspirational place to work from home. Besides turning the room into a splendid mad science lair, they also made what Northrup calls “the fist step to greater cat mobility throughout the room”.

The Cat Tube stretches around the room and gives the cat access to the top of the armoire. There’s even a couple of small windows that let you see where your cat is going. Just take my money already!

Pumpktris: A Fully Playable Pumpkin Tetris

October 31st, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you thought Pumpkin Carvings by Ray Villafane were awesome, you have to see this! A DIY website’s HahaBird user Nathan Pryor turned his pumpkin into a fully functioning Tetris game. So-called Pumpktris is rigged with 128 LEDs while its stem is used as a joy stick to control the falling figures.

Nathan even put up a detailed explanation of his work process and the creation of the light matrix for anyone who’d be up for the challenge. After putting the lights together and figuring out a code to actually operate them, Nathan had to carve a pumpkin to put the construction inside. Lastly, he unscrewed the redball of the joystick to replace it with the pumpkin’s stem, and gave this new device a double-edged name of “joystem”.

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
