Incredible Trampled Snow Art by Simon Beck

December 27th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

When, due to his feet injuries, British engineer Simon Beck could no longer run, he decided to get some exercise by taking long walks. To make it more interesting, 54-year-old would put on his snowshoes and walk in distinctly geometric patterns. Step by step, after 8 to 10 hours of walking it creates some jaw-dropping trampled snow art.

Being an orienteering leader, Simon calls his method a ‘kind of reverse orienteering’ and first designs his patterns on the computer. Once in the snow, he uses an orienteering compass and a measuring tape to lay out the design, then picks up a clothes line and a central anchor to complete the circles and curves.

These snow ‘crop circles’ can be found in the ski resort of Les Arcs in France, where Simon resides during winter. For more snow art be sure to check out Sonja Hinrichsen that we’ve featured last year.

Mysterious Underwater Circles Found near Japan

September 25th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

You’ve probably heard a lot of stories about crop circles and aliens, but surprisingly a Japanese photographer Yoji Ookata has found something very similar 80 ft below the sea level. While diving off the coast of Japan, he discovered a mysterious ~6.5 ft wide circle precisely carved from sand. Yoji decided to come back with a TV crew to figure out this strange phenomenon.

The cameras revealed that the culprit was a few-inch long puff fish, creating the sand sculptures by swimming tirelessly and using its single fin. The team figured that this is how the female fish attract the male ones, and the center of the circle is where the pair lays the eggs. The riffles then serve as a protective buffer against ocean currents. In fact, the more riffles a fish makes, the more chances it has to find a pair.

Stunning Sand Drawings by Andres Amador

March 21st, 2012 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

San Francisco-area based landscape artist Andres Amador creates amazing large-scale sand paintings on beaches using only a rake and some help from volunteers.

“My dream is to do my artwork in locations around the world and to bring more people into the creative act with me,” says the artist.

We’ve already featured some Sand Drawings by Jim Denevan and Snow Paintings by Sonja Hinrichsen before, but it still amazes me how many hours are spent creating something so large yet impermanent as these beach drawings. According to Amador’s website, the artist and his pupils have only 2 hours to do their thing before the tide returns.

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
