Probably the most Beautiful Street in the World

March 21st, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Located in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, this gorgeous tree-lined street is said to be the most beautiful street in the world. Planted 70 years ago by German employees in a former brewery site, one hundred tipuana trees stretch approximately 500 meters. In 2005, some of the trees were almost cut down to make a room for a shopping mall, however, local residents forced the mayor José Fogaça to sign a decree making the street of Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho “historical, cultural and environmental heritage of the city.”

Tunnel Of Love in Ukraine

September 26th, 2012 by Ieva | No Comments | Filed in Design

For those of us who are head over heals in love, here’s a new destination to consider. The Tunnel of Love, located in Ukraine, used to be just another train rail section, but eventually turned into one of the most romantic spots on Earth.

As trees were left to grow freely around the rails, the passing train was the only thing shaping its way through. Eventually, by crossing the Kleven village forest back and forth three times a day, the train shaped a closed tunnel according to it’s size.

Today the Tunnel of Love is highly popular among lovers: it is believed that if two people are sincere in their love and cross the tunnel while holding each other’s hands, their wishes will come true.

Pedestrian Crossing in China Turns Pedestrian Footsteps Into Leaves

September 19th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

In order to demonstrate how choosing walking over driving actually helps the environment, Jody Xiong from DDB China, in cooperation with the China Environmental Protection Foundation, put together a very impressive outside installation on the the pedestrian crossings in China.

Massive 12.6-metre-long and 7-metre-wide white canvases with drawings of bare trees were unfolded on the pedestrian crossings in 15 different cities of China. On both sides of the sidewalk they put huge sponge cushions soaked in green environmentally-friendly paint. Every time a person crossed the street, the paint got on his/her shoes turning their footsteps into leaves. That way the creators were sending a message, that the more you walk, the greener the trees will be. Literally!

Almost 4 million people were involved in creating 132 trees. Now that’s efficient environmental education!

DIY Solar Bottle Bulb

June 2nd, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you don’t have electricity or live in a home with no windows, it’s going to be dark inside, even during a sunny day. Luckily, a bottled liter of water with some bleach can provide approximately 55-60 watts of light from the sun. This simple idea has helped many dwellers in the light-deprived slums of the Philippines.  “A Liter of Light” is a sustainable lighting project by Illac Diaz which aims to bring the eco-friendly Solar Bottle Light to disprivileged communities worldwide.

Christmas Tree Made of 32,000 Recycled Bottles

December 21st, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

About a week ago Design You Trust wrote about an amazing 13 meters tall Christmas tree “made of 40 thousands ‘SPRITE’ plastic bottles” in Kaunas, Lithuania. However, according to the original sources like Delfi and Lrytas, there are “only” 32,000 recycled plastic bottles, but the tree will have 40,000 Christmas lights. That’s why you should never trust anyone, even if they have a word “trust” in their name.

Nevertheless, the Christmas tree looks really great, and it’s especially beautiful at night when it’s lit from the inside and the green bottles start to sparkle.

“Green color represents peace, nature and ecology. Ecology is expensive, and only conscious Europeans understand that ecology costs money. We are lucky, because we didn’t have to spend the budget money,” says the author of idea, Jolanta Smidtien?. However, some people argue that with all those lights used to lit the tree it isn’t so green after all.

Update: Apparently, it is not Sprite bottles, nor even recycled – 40.000 emerald plastic bottles were bought from a local company.

Bicycle vs. Car [Pic]

October 3rd, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

“This one runs on fat and saves you money / This one runs on money and makes you fat”

I’ve borrowed this cool idea from Design to Improve Life and made it look a little bit nicer. You can find the original version on their Facebook Wall here. What’s interesting is that according to Reno Rambler’s calculations in terms of fuel cost, it can be almost three times as expensive to ride a bike if you run on Big Macs as it is to drive a car.

So, what do you choose?

26 Green Design Ideas Inspired By Nature

June 8th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

No matter how advanced our society and technology is, we can never forget our origins, and we will always need something green around us. Of course, the best idea is actually spending some time in the countryside, but it’s not always possible, so the only thing left is probably bringing some nature to your house instead.

Maybe you would like to stand on a living moss bath mat when you get out from the bath? Sit on a grass covered furniture, and wear a planter on your neck when you leave your house? Human creativity has no limits!

Let’s take a look at some of the most creative green design ideas inspired by nature and maybe find something for yourself.

Which one do you like the most?

1. A Wearable Planter

Why should your plants stay at home? They help clean the air you breathe, are beautiful, and create a wonderful conversation starter. Carry a sprout, a succulent, or a flower you found on your morning walk. (Designer: Colleen Jordan)

2. Living Moss Bath Mat

Constructed of a decay-resistant foam called plastazote, this bath mat is a nursery for three varieties of living moss: ball mass, island moss and forest moss. The humidity of the bathroom and the drops flowing from the body, water the mosses. Great feeling to your feet are guaranteed! (Designer: Nguyen La Chanh)

3. Table With Removable Planter

Emily Wettstein used reclaimed walnut and steel to craft this beautifully organic table. (link)

4. Dilston Grove

Through the application of clay, germinating grass seed, water and natural light the boundary between growth and decay, reverie and renewal was exposed within this repository of spiritual memory. The artists regarded the architectural structure as in some sense being inert, brooding and boarded up, no longer functioning in the community. Bringing memory to the surface, the living skin of grass literally drew life back within the fabric of the church. A momentary resurrection. (Designers: Ackroyd & Harvey)

5. Green Bed

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
