Water Running Through a 24hz Sine Wave

March 13th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

We already wrote about Brusspup and his crazy anamorphic illusions – and now he’s back with new tricks! This time he attempts to bend water using an audio speaker set to produce a 24hz sine waves. His first video, testing the principle, made it look as the water was going upwards, but now Brusspup has taken it up a notch and actually makes the water flow in shapes and patterns!

Unfortunately, the trick is that you can only see it through a 24 fps camera. The installation consists of a water hose that’s attached to a speaker with 1 or 2 inches hanging down, so that when the speaker produces sound, it vibrates the hose as well. An audio cable is attached from the computer to the speaker and the sound software is adjusted to 24 hz. When Brusspup turns on the music and the water, the result he sees through his camera is water running down in the shape of stairs and spirals. You can get different results if you set the frequency to 23 or 25hz as well!

Mind-Boggling Illustrations by Oscar Ramos

February 7th, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

“Escher on steroids” – this is how some commenters describe the illustrations by Oscar Ramos. In his latest project Ad+, Chilean artist shows that it’s possible to merge two completely different things with such smooth transition that you hardly notice how a baggy Converse turns into a paradise island in the same picture.

Also known by his nickname Piensa Positivo (“think positive” in Spanish), Oscar specializes in character design and photo manipulation. The creator of these mind-bending illustrations says his inspiration came from Maurits Cornelis Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, who classic perspective-defying works are known worldwide.

Incredible Anamorphic Sculptures by Jonty Hurwitz

January 22nd, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

London-based artist Jonty Hurwitz creates amazing anamorphic sculptures that can only be seen in their own reflections. In fact, without the mirror cylinder, most of his pieces would look like rubbish.

To create these sculptures, Jonty first scans a three-dimensional object, then uses computational software to come up with new physical forms.

“Finding that line between art and science is the underlying motivator in my art life,” says Jonty. “At heart I’m an artist scientist archetype that loves projects and people. Each of the art works and ventures on this site represent a part of what I am.”

If you’re in London, don’t miss a chance to see Jonty’s work exhibited at the Kinetica Art Fair, February 28th through March 3rd.

3D Pencil Drawings by Ramon Bruin

October 19th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Even though Ramon Bruin has a degree in airbrushing, it’s his other skill that made our jaws drop. A Netherlands-based artist creates amazing 3D optical illusions all with an ordinary pencil. As he puts it, trying photo-realism was just another way for him to push his boundaries and add another technique to his portfolio.

A 31-year-old Ramon is mostly self-taught and impressively versatile: he can also paint and draw with acrylic, oil, water paints, charcoal, paint pens, pencils and graphite. Combining his 9-year experience in airbrush and knowledge from the Academy studies, Ramon established the JJK Airbrush company. It specializes in customized work only and declares that their sole purpose is “create kick-ass airbrush designs”!

Incredible Hand Painting Illusions by Annie Ralli

September 3rd, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember the amazing Hand Painting Art by Guido Daniele we posted two years ago? Well, don’t be deceived, this is not another collection of his work.

The hand paintings below are all painted by a talented London-based body painter Annie Ralli. Photographed by Ray Massey, these hand illusions are a part of advertising campaign for Ecclesiastical Insurance, a niche insurance company using the byline “You’re in good hands”.

“Bodypainting is a skill I perfected working with stills photographers,” says Annie, who is also a former BBC scenic artist.

“It is meticulous work, but it has to be carried out at speed, partly because the “cavas” walkas away at the end of the day and partly because paint is less stable on a living, moving base. The work is fun and the results can be beautiful.”

Souvenir Optical Illusions by Michael Hughes

August 23rd, 2012 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

At first glance, it may look like the real Big Ben. But wait… what’s that hand doing in there?

Actually, it’s the hand of photographer and tourist Michael Hughes who creates cool optical illusions by placing cheap souvenirs in front of famous landmarks. Michael has discovered the technique back in 1998 when he held up a postcard he bought for his daughter on the tourist platform at the Lorelei cliffs next to the river Rhine.

“I was amazed because it just seemed to fill a massive grey hole that was in the sky and it was the exact position the photographer had taken the picture from,” said Michael to Daily Mail.

His Flickr site is now well beyond the 5 million mark, but the absolute high point was when he got an email from the producer of the Jay Leno Show. Unfortunately, “the ensuing telephone conversation was enough to persuade her that he would be utterly useless on TV, so he missed his big chance.”

Incredible Food Portrait of the World’s Best Chef

August 21st, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

For the cover of the August issue of Clase Premier Magazine, Mexican studio Golpeavisa had to make a portrait of René Redzepi, the world’s best chef. Usually, these cover illustrations are digital drawings, but this time Golpeavisa decided to push their luck a little bit further, and do the illustration photographically.

The idea was to shoot a bunch of cuisine and kitchen related elements positioned in such a way that it would look like a silhouette of Redzepi’s face.

“It was a lot harder than we thought but it was a lot of fun. Yorch took charge of the lighting and photographical production while the rest of us sketched the composition and placed the elements in the shot.”

Girl on a Path: Mind-Bending Optical Illusion

July 25th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

This amazing optical illusion of a girl on a path is making rounds on the Internet, and surprisingly no one has mentioned the author. Do you know who the author is?

Update: according to our facebook fan Nolwenn Chauvin, this is a work by Japanese artist Makoto Aida titled AZEMICHI (a path between rice fields). Business Week says that this acrylic painting is a parody of the best-known work of Kaii Higashiyama, a major figure in Japanese modern painting. Makoto Aida was at a loss what to do after graduating from a prestigious art college in 1991 and took nearly a year to paint this picture [1].

Incredible 3D Pencil Drawings by Nagai Hideyuki

June 27th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember the amazing 3D Pencil Drawings by 17 Year Old Fredo we’ve shown you last year? Well, don’t be deceived, this is not another collection of his work.

The sketches below are all drawn by the 21-year-old Nagai Hideyuki from Japan. Inspired by British 3D street artist Julian Beever, Hide uses the same projection technique called anamorphosis which allows to create 3D illusion when viewed from the correct angle.

At the age of 17, the artist wanted to become a cartoonist, but didn’t have the talent to draw comics. However, three years later, after seeing Julian Beever’s street art in the newspaper, Hide decided to create art in the streets of Japan. But he soon realized that it was against the law. This is how he ended up drawing on paper.

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.

We are a new design group hoping to achieve great things

    Meet some of our friends.
