Audio Frequencies Create Amazing Sand Patterns (Video)

June 19th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

We already wrote about Brusspup’s incredible anamorphic illusions and his ability to bend running water with audio frequencies. Now the guy is back with even more amazing resonance trick, called the Chladni plate experiment! This time Brusspup attached the tone generator to a black metal plate and poured sand over it. As the sound frequencies from the speaker make the plate vibrate, the sand gravitates to those areas where there are less vibrations, and creates complex sand patterns. These patterns are never random, and get more complex with the higher frequency. Tempted to try it yourself? (via: Colossal)

More 3D Pencil Drawings by Ramon Bruin

June 18th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Do you remember Ramon Bruin and his incredible 3d pencil art we wrote about last year? A mostly self-taught artist from the Netherlands now has a whole bunch of new 3D optical illusions. Ramon continues to draw with regular pencils and keeps developing his anamorphic techniques, that make the paintings look 3D. No wonder that every time you see a prop he left by the drawing, you start questioning if this one is actually real!

31-year old artist with a degree in airbrushing demonstrates great talent with many different art mediums, among them being oil, water paint, acrylic, paint pens, charcoal, graphite and pencils. Trying 3D drawing, according to him, was just another way to push his own boundaries. Despite all the many personal projects, Ramon also runs JJK Airbrush company, offering some “kick-ass airbrush designs”. And for the last time – yes, all of the pictures below are actually 2D!

Classical Sculptures Dressed As Hipsters

June 17th, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

We first wrote about Caillard and Persani’s hipster sculptures over a year ago, and since the new works by this duo are just as hilarious, we couldn’t let them go unnoticed!

Whatever they say about not judging a book by its cover, we still do it. French photographer Léo Caillard and art director Alexis Persani illustrate that with their Street Stone photography series, were they dress ancient Louvre’s sculptures into something more trendy and up-to-date. Besides marrying two completely different worlds, the artists also demonstrate a great cultural change that the society has undergone throughout centuries, since the original sculptures were created.

To create these photo manipulations, Caillard first photographed the sculptures and then had his friends strike similar poses, wearing such hipster accessories like the Ray Ban shades, flannel and denim shirts and shorts. He would then dress the sculptures using Photoshop as well as Persani’s retouching skills.

The results are not only hilarious, but also show that clothes have an enormous impact on the way one is perceived.

Cute Miniature Crocheted Animals by Su Ami

June 14th, 2013 by Ieva | No Comments | Filed in Design

A family-run crocheting manufacture from Vietnam proves that size doesn’t matter! Their miniature crocheted animals are so small that they fit on a finger tip, and some of them hardly reach 1/4 of an inch. The idea for the business was inspired by the youngest (10-year-old) member of the family, who’s greatly fond of various movie characters and loves animals. Her nickname even ended up being the name of the company.

A five-member company uses different crocheting techniques in their work and always goes for nice and bright colors. The miniature animals are so detailed that every member of the tiny penguin family wears a differently colored scarf, the whale actually spits water out of its back and the birds even lay teeny tiny eggs!

Mind-Blowing Supercell Thunderstorm Filmed Near Booker, Texas

June 13th, 2013 by Ieva | No Comments | Filed in Design

It took Mike Olbinski 4 years of failed attempts before he actually got his dream: on June 3rd he and Andy Hoeland managed to capture an unworldly time-lapse video of a rotating supercell thunderstorm near Booker, Texas.

Even though the chase started off from the wrong side – north – the two storm chasers took their chances and actually drove through storm system to the other side of it. The risk paid off, and Mike could film the cloud formations with his Canon 5D Mark II and Rokinon 14mm 2.8 lens.

“There are no words really to describe the moment we saw this storm. Seeing something like this has been a longtime goal of mine. This was my fourth year chasing in the plains and I’ve never come CLOSE to this kind of structure. Pictures don’t do it justice. This was with a 14mm lens. It seems like it’s far away and safe, but in reality it was crazy close and we were ready to bail at any moment,” says Mike.

How does it feel to finally get what you’ve been seeking for? “When I finally had all the cameras going and sat back to just take it all in…tears filled my eyes. I yelled with joy at the top of my lungs, I gave Andy a big hug, thanking him for picking this spot almost a week before as our target location. It was a magnificent moment.” Make sure you watch the footage full-screen and in HD!

40 Hyper Realistic Artworks That Are Hard to Believe Aren’t Photographs

June 12th, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

Although sometimes art is meant to stress its detachment from the reality, hyperrealism practically erases this line. Pictures and sculptures, created by hyper realist artists, will look no different from a high resolution picture, making it hard to believe this was created using such regular tools as pencils or ballpoint pens.

Hyperrealistic images are typically 10 to 20 times the size of the original photographic reference source, yet retain an extremely high resolution in color, precision and detail. Many of the paintings are achieved with an airbrush, using acrylics, oils or a combination of both. [1]

We have already shown you some amazing examples of hyper realistic works, but here’s a selection of the most outstanding ones. We also included some photos of the creation process just to fully convince you these are not photographs. Which of these artists is your favorite?

This is What a Bald Raccoon Looks Like

June 12th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you wonder what hairless raccoon would look like, here’s the answer. This poor raccoon has lost its hair over the course of a few months, and now looks like a new species.
Redditor Oafah says he was spotted in Toronto and had lost his hair over the winter:

“A friend of a friend took pictures periodically every time she’d spot this little creature from her Toronto apartment complex. It went from being a furry ginger to being smooth as a baby’s ass, largely over the winter.”

Some say it “has acquired non-inflammatory alopecia” while others think “it’s probably just been going through Chemo.” What do you think?

Creative Dad Photoshops His Baby Daughter Into Crazy Situations

June 10th, 2013 by Lina | No Comments | Filed in Design

If Singlhild Nystrom survives all the crazy things she’s doing, she will have one of the coolest childhood photo albums ever – all thanks to her dad’s endless imagination and Photoshop skills. Swedish photographer Emil Nystrom digitally inserts his 1-year-old daughter into such crazy situations as fixing a car, wielding a ninja sword or flying after a plane. Interestingly, some of the photos were made even before baby Singhild could crawl, her mom Isabelle had to hold her up for a shoot and be erased from the frame later.

“When Isabelle was pregnant with our baby I came up with many ideas that I wanted to do once the baby arrived,” says Emil. “It’s just so much fun. There is nothing serious about these pictures and that shows when we take them. The only thing that usually is in my mind when I take them is to get as funny face as possible from the baby.” Photographer says he never knows where the inspiration might come from: sometimes an idea hits him while doing something completely different, and sometimes he does have to sit down and brainstorm a bit.

Emil lines up as another prolific member of the creative dads’ community, along with Jason Lee and Dave Engledow, who can all proudly say their kids will have great memories captured even before they could remember them.

Dream-Like Long Exposure Photos of Fireflies in Nagoya, Japan

June 6th, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

If you are tired of the usual long exposure photos, then this post is for you. Japanese photographer Yume Cyan has spent the last month in the forests of Nagoya City, Japan, shooting some surreal long exposure photographs of fireflies.

His long exposure shots (often 30 seconds at ISO 800) were taken with a Canon 5D Mark III and 50 mm lens. The aperture was set at f/2.8 – this made the closer fireflies look like out-of-focus circles of light. Finally the photos were combined together into composite shots.

According to Wikipedia, there are more than 2,000 species of fireflies, but despite their name, only some species produce adults that glow. These lightning bugs produce the most efficient light in the world – nearly 100 percent of the energy in the chemical reaction is emitted as light.

You can usually take such surreal photographs during the rainy seasons, from June to July, when fireflies mate after thunderstorms. For more examples, be sure to check out Long Exposure Photos of Gold Fireflies by Yuki Karo.
