Incredible 3D Sculptures made of Sewing Buttons

March 18th, 2013 by Jolita | No Comments | Filed in Design

Miami-based artist Augusto Esquivel creates incredible sculptures from thousands and thousands of sewing buttons. The artist carefully places these newly found tiny multi-colored art materials on a fishing line and builds magnificent artworks. Esquivel has already made quite a few of them, including a piano, a harp, a gramophone, a fire extinguisher and many more.

Augusto says that a simple sewing button may seem insignificant and small when it lays in a grandma’s sewing box, but at the same time it can be very unique and valuable as a part of an artwork. Augusto’s work can be compared to the molecule’s structure- like small atoms, buttons come together in unity and create brilliant art pieces.

Incredible Anamorphic Sculptures by Jonty Hurwitz

January 22nd, 2013 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

London-based artist Jonty Hurwitz creates amazing anamorphic sculptures that can only be seen in their own reflections. In fact, without the mirror cylinder, most of his pieces would look like rubbish.

To create these sculptures, Jonty first scans a three-dimensional object, then uses computational software to come up with new physical forms.

“Finding that line between art and science is the underlying motivator in my art life,” says Jonty. “At heart I’m an artist scientist archetype that loves projects and people. Each of the art works and ventures on this site represent a part of what I am.”

If you’re in London, don’t miss a chance to see Jonty’s work exhibited at the Kinetica Art Fair, February 28th through March 3rd.

Incredible Pencil Tip Sculptures by Diem Chau

July 27th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

When I saw these tiny carvings, I thought that Dalton Ghetti has added some new works to his incredible series of pencil tip sculptures. However, it turns out that these wonderful micro sculptures were actually carved by Vietnamese-American artist Diem Chau.

The sculpture of an elephant was made after Diem saw the photos of Jimmy John Liautaud, founder of Jimmy John’s, killing endangered animals on safari in Africa. “I was enraged and disgusted,” says Diem on her blog. “I wanted to make something beautiful and sad.  I feel his loneliness.”

The second piece called “The Raven & The Sun” is based on the Native American myth of how the Raven stole the Sun and gave light to the world.

Diem’s carvings are so well executed that it makes me sad that there are only two of them. Now I’m bookmarking her blog and will continue to refresh it everyday till I see more amazing pencil tip sculptures!

5,000 Books Pour Out of a Window in Spain

April 26th, 2012 by Tomas | No Comments | Filed in Design

Spanish installation artist Alicia Martin transforms thousands of old books into giant waterfalls which pour out the windows straight into the streets. Her massive installations have been installed in various places across Europe, however Martin’s most recent series, known as Biografies, are based in her hometown, Madrid.

These gravity-defying book sculptures from her Biografies series were installed in the three of Madrid’s historic buildings, each installation consisting of approximately 5,000 books.

To support the heavy weight of the books, each sculpture has a special metal framework inside. They make the installation safe and sturdy, however the books’ pages are left loose and free to rustle in the wind.

Amazing Pumpkin Carvings by Ray Villafane

October 27th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Ray Villafane’s relationship with pumpkins began rather early in his life. Born in a poor farming family, he found himself having to whittle his own toys out of wood as times were very hard for Pa’ Villafane. As things got worse he was forced to give up using wood to create his toys and eventually had to make them out of pumpkins as the precious wood was needed to heat the small farm house during the winter. Because his toys rotted away a week or so after making them, Ray found himself carving nonstop just to keep his toy box from spoiling.

Throughout his academic career, Ray’s classmates and teachers also recognized his natural artistic abilities. Ray graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1991.

Despite all of the big name products Ray was sculpting, the public seemed to be most intrigued with his on going pumpkin carvings. Ray has won back to back Food Network Challenges for his pumpkin carvings and has been featured on many TV shows and news broadcasts including The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. In 2010 Ray was even invited to carve pumpkins at the White House!

Amazing Fountain of Running Horses at Las Colinas

September 30th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Mustangs at Las Colinas is a breathtakingly realistic bronze sculpture by Robert Glen, that decorates Williams Square in Las Colinas in Irving, Texas. It is said to be the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. The mustangs were shipped by air from England to Irving, Texas, and after the intricate procedure of mounting the figures, the Mustangs of Las Colinas sculpture was dedicated on September 25, 1984.

The sculpture commemorates the wild mustangs that were historically important inhabitants of much of Texas. It portrays a group at 1.5 times life size, running through a watercourse, with fountains giving the effect of water splashed by the animals’ hooves. The horses are intended to represent the drive, initiative and unfettered lifestyle that were fundamental to the state in its pioneer days. (sources: 1 2)

Tiny Sculptures Made From A Single Toothpick

February 11th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Steven J. Backman, a San Francisco native, makes incredible tiny sculptures using only one toothpick, a straight edged razor blade and glue. It all began in elementary school when Steven made a Science project of DNA molecules from ordinary toothpicks and beans.

While attending San Francisco State University in the fall of 1984, where Steven later received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Arts, he decided to design a San Francisco cable car for an art project using toothpicks and glue. This was one way in which he knew how to show his appreciation for these mobile historical landmarks. Shortly after, Steven established his toothpick art business named “Landmarks of San Francisco,” which he still presently operates.

Steven’s motto, “The Essence of Patience,” truly exemplifies his drive and determination towards creating unique and unforgettable one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Steven feels that making these sculptures is as relaxing as lying on a secluded island at peace with himself and his surroundings. He is truly a perfectionist at heart and takes much pride in his toothpick sculptures.

Creepy Porcelain Dolls by Jessica Harrison

January 13th, 2011 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

It hasn’t been long since Creepy Tableware by Ronit Baranga made us lose our appetites, but what you are about to see will make your eyes bleed! I used to think that Shain Erin made the Creepiest Dolls, but a British figurine artist Jessica Harrison has taken creepiness to the whole new level. Shain’s dolls are for kids!

“The work isn’t intended to be confrontational, but work dealing directly with the body is often interpreted in this way precisely because of this shared experience of the body, as people can see it as a kind of attack on themselves, as a body is something we all have and recognise. The humour that appears in the work is often my way of balancing this feeling of confrontation, aggression, or what people might see as grotesque. Sometimes people are more open to looking at something that appears humorous, and hopefully if they look for a little bit longer then maybe they will find other meanings in the work.” (full interview: dontpanic)

13 Strangest Sculptures from Around the World

September 28th, 2010 by Bored Panda | No Comments | Filed in Design

Have you ever noticed that tourists try to get a picture near every boring sculpture or statue they can find? Most of the time, they don’t even care who made it, or why it is there in the first place.

The worst part of it is when your friends come back from vacation, and you have to watch all those crappy DSC0001.jpg, DSC0002.jpg… DSC1562.jpg files.

In order to show how pointless it is – every time I travel I ask people to take pictures of me near garbage bins.

However, there are some truly amazing exceptions I must say, and I’ve put them all in this little list of Strangest Sculptures from Around the World. Hope you like it, but if you miss some great sculpture here – don’t be angry, just share it by leaving a comment!

1. Upside Down Charles La Trobe Statue (Australia)

It stands on his head in Melbrourne at La Trobe University Bundoora.

(Bamboos for phil.lees)

2. Vomiting Fountain Sculpture (London, UK)

(Bamboos for akanekal)

3. Device to Root Out Evil  (Calgary, Canada)

(Bamboos for whistlepunch)

Designed by Dennis Oppenheim. Located in the neighbourhood of Ramsay, Calgary, Canada.

4. Traffic Light Tree (London, UK)

(Bamboos for Squirmelia)

Designed by Pierre Vivant, “Traffic Light Tree” has 75 sets of traffic lights. The sculpture was created to mimic a tree structure and reflect the energy of the developing Canary Wharf area.

5. Skull (Prague, Czech Republic)

(Bamboos for Steve Montgomery)

A really odd sculpture, that is said to be “inspired” by the works of Kafka.

6. Peeing Guys by D. Cerny (Prague, Czech Rep.)

(Bamboos for Chaymation)

(Bamboos for Irwin)

“The idea is disarmingly simple. Two bronze sculptures pee into their oddly-shaped enclosure (actually it’s the shape of the Czech Republict).

While they are peeing, the two figures move realistically. An electric mechanism driven by a couple of microprocessors swivels the upper part of the body, while the penis goes up and down. The stream of water writes quotes from famous Prague residents.

Visitor can interrupt them by sending SMS message from mobile phone to a number, displayed next to the sculptures. The living statue then “writes” the text of the message, before carrying on as before.” Chaymation

7. Nation for Itself Forever by D. Cerny

(Bamboos for davidcerny.cz)

To keep the statue it has been changed more or less due to fear of protests that the project is aimed at National Theater itself.

8. Disturbing Ballerina Man (Los Angeles, CA, USA)

(Bamboos for SeraphimC)

9. Engagement Rings (Vancouver, Canada)

(Bamboos for Troy B Thompson)

Two engagement rings in the ground at English Bay – must be a good place to engage. Designed by Dennis Oppenheim .

10. Skeletons In Love (Nong Khai, N.E. Thailand)

(Bamboos for peterkellystudios)

11. Würsa 18000Km From Earth (France)

(Bamboos for dalbera)

At a distance of 18,000 km from the earth, the elephant Wursa could balance on her trunk. It is on the basis of learned scientific calculations that Daniel Firman reached this conclusion, and came above all to produce this extraordinary work which confounds all our certainties regarding the gravitation of bodies.

12. Giant Tap (Tecnopark Wintertur, Switzerland)

(Bamboos for Bill Liao)

13. Tübingen Microbiology Institute (Germany)

(Bamboos for jim265)

Did we forget to include some cool sculpture on our list? Share it with other pandas!

  • About us

It was in the back corner of McDonalds with a couple of hours to wait for a train home to Norwich, that theDot first came together. Freshly inspired by a weekend at the 4designers conference in London and having traipsed around museums and exhibitions all day, three minds came together over chicken burgers and chips.

The three are currently studying Graphic Communication at Norwich University College of the Arts, where they delve into advertising, corporate branding, design for publishing, photography, illustration and so on. All confident in their skills, but continuing on their learning journey.
